How to build a Shed…

September 20, 2009

This weekend we demolished Tara’s old garden shed (rotten roof; home to a million spiders) and erected a shiny new and somewhat orange-coloured replacement. This may sound like a fairly trivial task but let me disavow you of that notion right now! First you have to correctly identify all the parts in case anything is missing (door hinges in this case) and give all the external surfaces a coat of weatherproofing, which needs time to dry. Dismantling the old wreck was a task in itself, and then clearing the several years of detritus from around and underneath the shed. We also took the opportunity to saw off a couple of hefty overhanging branches. We started the whole process Saturday afternoon, and it was 2pm Sunday by the time we actually got started assembling the new shed.

Much drilling and hammering ensued. Putting the walls up was straightforward enough but it took three pairs of hands to get each of the two roof panels into position, and then nail it down whilst leaning on one corner to force the structure back into a rectangle which actually lined up (well, almost) with the roof panels. It was getting dark by the time I hit my thumb hard whilst nailing down the roofing felt (OUCH!). The door didn’t quite fit the resulting doorway but we attached it anyway and will plane down the door edge sometime soon. By 10:30 I had finally fitted and glazed the one window and then we called it a day – aided by some of Tara’s typically delicious food 🙂
